Vocabulary & writing

From naming to describing

Help children turn a familiar object name into a clear description through vocabulary, position words and oral rehearsal.

Begin with a name

Use the Garden Crew picture. Ask children to name a plant, pot or tool. Supply unfamiliar words, such as “watering can” and “trowel,” while pointing to the matching object. Children can repeat the word before using it in a sentence.

Add a visible detail

Choose one object and ask, “What does it look like?” Encourage details about colour, size or shape. Model “a green watering can” or “a tall plant with many leaves.” Check that each describing word matches something visible.

Say where it is

Introduce position words such as near, beside and above. Point to the pots and model: “The pots are near the plants.” Let children choose another object and explain its position. Use gestures when a position word is unfamiliar.

Rehearse before writing

Invite children to say their sentence aloud before recording it. A partner can listen and point to the object described. Kindergarten learners can dictate a sentence to an adult. For more challenge, combine two accurate details with “and.” The goal is a description that helps someone else picture the scene.
